Cadillac has announced their new Pedestrian-Detection system which can connect through the driver’s smartphone.  As this safety system is based on a Wi-Fi technology that uses Wi-Fi capable devices and enables them to talk to each other without an internet connection.

With Cadillac’s pedestrian-detection system, drivers can download an app to their phone, which will then run in the background and find anyone close to the vehicle with a Wi-Fi Direct capable device.  With this type of system, it’s easier for a vehicle to keep track of several different pedestrians in the vicinity as opposed to relying on just what a radar or camera system can see.

In the year 2010, 4,280 pedestrians and 618 bicyclists were the victims of fatal accidents caused by vehicles.  This system could help to greatly reduce those numbers.
